Rabbi Philip Sherman returned to Temple Beth Elohim in July 2025 after serving as Senior Rabbi at Congregation B’nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim in Deerfield, Illinois. Originally from the Midwest, Rabbi Sherman is now proud to call Boston home. Previously, Rabbi Sherman served TBE for nine years, and is thrilled to once again share in the wonderful community that shaped and inspired his rabbinate.
Rabbi Sherman was ordained in 2013 at Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts, where he also received a Master’s Degree in Jewish Education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction and Honors in Jewish Studies from Indiana University.
From a young age, Rabbi Sherman loved being immersed in Jewish communities. He was president of Emtza Region USY, and spent summers at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. While in rabbinical school, he held various rabbinic positions in the Boston area and New England, including MIT Hillel, the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe, and the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Rabbi Sherman found his connection to Reform Judaism while in rabbinical school. During those years of study and throughout his time at TBE, he explored and experienced the beauty of the theology, practice, and prophetic call for justice that are the foundation of the Reform Movement. Rabbi Sherman is deeply committed to fostering vibrant, inclusive Jewish life rooted in tradition and responsive to today’s world.
Rabbi Sherman and his family are deeply grateful to make their home in the TBE community. Outside the temple, you can find him cheering on his favorite sports teams, spending time outdoors, and enjoying a great cup of coffee.
