TBE’s Community Voice

Like many others, my story of the last several months can be summarized in one word: pandemic. I cannot remember a more disruptive life event, other than births – and deaths – in my immediate family. For me, these months have been a story of adaptation.

As a life-long extrovert, one of the biggest challenges for me has been the interruption of normal social engagement. As many of us have discovered, Zoom is a band-aid, not a replacement, for in-person gatherings. Add to this a job search, an ailing parent, and three adult daughters trying to navigate this “new normal” and I am more than ready to put COVID-19 in the rearview mirror.

That said, I’ve had some amazing experiences these last few months which have brought me great joy. Susan and I went from empty-nesters to full-nesters during the summer. Who could have ever predicted we’d have two months together as a family of five again? (I am pleased to report that we all got along – most of the time). And the rare (socially distanced) get togethers with friends are so much more special now.

I’ve also discovered the power of the TBE community. On-line Shabbat services have provided a way to reconnect with people (and my attendance has skyrocketed). My work with the TBE Congregant Connections team (you know who you are) has been truly meaningful, but even more importantly, has created wonderful new friendships that will last a lot longer than this pandemic. I’m also grateful for the bonds I’ve built with congregation Ohev Avraham members in Haifa, and everything they have taught me about Israel. Seeing what we can do when we all work together never ceases to amaze me and always gives me hope.

Finally, while I wish a lot of things had gone differently in 2020, I know I am one of the fortunate. My family is safe, and I’ve developed truly strong connections with friends, both new and old. If only I had invested in Zoom in February…

L’Shanah Tovah!
