TBElle: Almost President (Online)

  • Program Leader: Mel Warshaw
The inspiration for this class is a little publicized book, Almost President: The Men Who Lost the Race but Changed the Nation, by Scott Farris. It profiles the men  who have run for the Presidency and lost – but who, even in defeat, have had a greater impact on American history than many of those who have served as President.
Farris explains how Barry Goldwater achieved party realignment that eluded FDR and paved the way for Ronald Reagan. He explains how George McGovern’s progressive ideas pave the way for Barack Obama. He chronicles the efforts of Al Smith to become the first Catholic President leading a generation later to the election of John Kennedy. He questions if the course of history would have  been different if Tom Dewey had to decide to drop the atomic bomb on Japan not Harry Truman or whether America should enter the Korean War to offset the Chinese?
Discussions about these six fascinating men will be led by six of our most interesting congregants, Les Goldstein (Dewey), Bert Snyder (Stevenson), Alan Solomont (Gore/Kerry), Sandy Sherizen (Goldwater), Gerry Tishler (McGovern) and Mel Warshaw (Al Smith).

Dates & Time: Tuesdays, April 18 & 25, May 2, 9, 16, & 23, 12:45-2:00 pm
