Are you a creative soul who loves fiber arts or other hands-on crafts such as knitting, weaving, quilting, painting, ceramics or crochet? Join us for a unique and transformative program that blends the ancient tradition of counting the Omer with the meditative power of fiber and creative arts.
Get started at an introductory open house, where you will learn more about the practice of counting the Omer and design a personal plan for your Omer project, open to an artistic medium of your choice. (Please note: the last half hour will be flexible time to work on project design, so those needing to leave early will have the option of leaving at 7:00 pm.)
Then, you will continue independently throughout the 49 days of the Omer (April 13–June 1), the sacred period between Passover and Shavuot. Each day of the Omer corresponds to two middot (character traits or divine attributes), as taught by Jewish mystical tradition. You will create a small, meaningful portion of art each day.
Whether it’s a row of knitting, a crochet granny square, a small sketch, or a few woven threads, each creation will symbolize your reflections on the day’s middot. You might imagine this to be like a Jewish version of a daily temperature blanket, but with more meaning and purpose (and for just 49 days!).
By the end of the Omer, you will have crafted a personal piece that represents your spiritual journey. Whether you finish with a woven tapestry, a knitted scarf, a crocheted blanket, a series of ceramic objects, or something else, your creations will be more than just beautiful—they will carry the energy of your personal transformation. We plan to showcase these creations in a gallery show during the weekend of Shavuot, May 30–June 1.
Participants will also be encouraged to connect throughout their practice, whether in person through participant-hosted making nights, or through virtual platforms such as WhatsApp or a Facebook group!
This program is perfect for anyone eager to connect with the sacred rhythm of the Omer while engaging in mindful, hands-on creativity. Bring your artistic passion and an open heart!
