“If I am not for myself, who is for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” (Pirkei Avot 1:14)

This timeless saying of Hillel is just one example of the moral clarity and spiritual challenge offered in Pirkei Avot, the unique tractate of Mishnah devoted entirely to the ethical teachings of the Talmudic Sages. In this course, we will engage in a deep and reflective study of Pirkei Avot’s six chapters, exploring not only the text’s wisdom but also the personalities, historical context, and philosophical underpinnings behind the aphorisms. Along the way, we will ask: What is the nature of Jewish wisdom? How have Jews across generations engaged with Avot in shaping moral character and communal norms?

As an optional capstone project, participants will be invited to compose their own “Pirkei Avot ve-Imahot”—a personal collection of ethical teachings to bequeath to future generations, drawing on the themes and values encountered in our study.

This course follows a sequential structure, and participants are encouraged to attend all sessions. If you are interested in joining once the course has begun, please contact the program leader.
