Presented in partnership with JCAM, the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts.
Join TBE and the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts for a film screening and talkback with Dani Rotstein, director of the new documentary Xueta Island: A Hidden History, which explores the fascinating legacy of the Xuetas (pronounced Chuetas), a unique group of families on the Balearic island of Majorca, Spain who are believed to be descendants of the island’s Inquisition-era Jewish population. Though they were practicing Catholics, the Xuetas were discriminated against up until the middle of the 20th century. As Jewish life makes a tentative return to the Balearic Islands, a stifled minority is reintroduced to half-remembered culture and traditions handed down under duress across generations. This illuminating film seeks to reconcile the painful past with a vision of a brighter, more inclusive future. Watch the trailer.
