The TBE Blog

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
-Leo Buscagila

Four years ago my family and I decided to join TBE. In order to get to know people within the community and to help out, I wanted to volunteer in various committees. Six years ago as a young mother, I suffered greatly with a life-threatening illness. Through the acts of kindness of those around me, my spirits were constantly being lifted and I was able to come out on the other side with a whole new perspective of the word, caring. When I saw the sign-ups to become a part of the Caring Community, I couldn’t resist joining. It is by far one of the most rewarding and fulfilling roles in my life.

Whether it is making calls to those who are sick, bringing chicken soup to those in need, delivering apples and honey, or simply chatting with congregants who need an extra ear, every moment is a moment fulfilled.

Being a part of the Caring Community has given me the opportunity to fulfill the Jewish values of Tikkun Olam, or Improving the World. It is a way for me to give back, or pay it forward, even if it’s the smallest act of kindness.

Teaching my daughters that caring for those beyond ourselves not only makes us feel good, it is also one of the most unselfish acts one can perform.
