In the Beginning: The Nature of Creativity Through Film (In Person)

What does it mean to create? Is human creativity a spark of divine inspiration, or the fruit of struggle, resilience, and longing? This fall, join us for a film-viewing and discussion series that explores the sacred, often mysterious process of artistic expression—and the courage, pain, and beauty that give rise to it. After each screening of Loving Vincent, Echo in the Canyon, and The Man Who Knew Infinity, we’ll come together in reflection and conversation with Ken Shulman to unpack themes of purpose, legacy, and the human spirit. Through film and guided dialogue, we’ll discover deeper connections that nourish understanding and community.

October 9 — Loving Vincent (2017, directed by Dorota Kobiela & Hugh Welchman)
A visually stunning, fully oil-painted animated film that explores the life and mysterious death of Vincent van Gogh through the eyes of those who knew him.

October 16 — Echo in the Canyon (2018, directed by Andrew Slater)
A nostalgic look at the mid-1960s Laurel Canyon music scene, featuring artists like The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Buffalo Springfield, and their lasting influence.

October 23 — The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015, directed by Matthew Brown)
A biographical drama about Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self-taught Indian mathematician whose groundbreaking work transformed the field despite deep personal and cultural obstacles.

Each course in this sequence is stand-alone, meaning you can attend as many or as few as you prefer! Feel free to join us for any session that interests you. If you have any questions about participating, please contact the program leader.
