Excited about the idea of unlocking Jewish wisdom and connecting to the texts that form the basis of Jewish identity from the primary sources of the Jewish canon—Torah, Talmud, Midrash, Commentaries, all that good stuff—but not sure where to start or how to read those texts? This series will give you an overview of how to contextualize and approach the types of Jewish sacred texts that you’re most likely to see in Torah study, the Beit Midrash, or other Jewish learning opportunities—using the primary source texts themselves to teach about their genres more broadly—so that you can feel equipped to jump right into group or self-study. This course does not require any prior experience with text study or knowledge of Hebrew.

This course follows a sequential structure, and participants are encouraged to attend all sessions. However, drop-ins are welcome at any point during the course. If you have any questions regarding participation, please contact the program leader.

eLeMeNTs courses this year are organized in two curricular tracks: “Wrestling with Big Questions” and “Exploring Jewish Identity.” You can take courses all within one track to explore related concepts from multiple angles, or jump from one track to another based on what courses intrigue you. This is the first course of the “Exploring Jewish Identity” track.

Dates: November 18, 25, December 9, 16
