The statue of Moses holding the commandments, brought forward from the walkway of our original building, continues to ground us in our covenantal relationship with God. The essence of what we understand as peoplehood is that we all stood together at Sinai to receive Torah. God’s words to our ancestors included all of us across time and space, “I make this covenant…not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day… and with those who are not here with us this day” (Deut. 29:13–14). From our two-story glass windows, we see Moses with the tablets raised in his hands and we understand viscerally that we all stood together at Sinai.
The sculpture was donated to TBE Judith and Douglas Krupp with the building’s first expansion in 1981–82. The second photo is of Moses in artist David Aronson’s studio, photo taken by the artist.
