Hebrew for “hiding place,” a genizah is a depository for sacred Hebrew books that are no longer usable. The design for our genizah was inspired by the HaBonim trip to Israel. The genizah was a prevalent ritual element we found in the many shuls we visited in Tzfat. Inspired, we chose to design our own genizah as an expression of our connection to Jewish peoplehood, a tradition that links us through time and place. The discovery of the Cairo Genizah in 1896 provided the world with a treasure trove, some most important documents of the medieval Middle East that revealed new insights and deepened understanding about contemporary and ancient Jewish thought and ritual.
