Join Men's Softball This Spring!
Come join one of TBE's men's softball teams this spring. Become part of a growing community of Beth Elohim guys who compete in the Greater Boston Men's Shul Softball League, with 40 other area synagogues. Players of all skill levels are welcome, and the focus is on building community and getting to know your fellow TBE congregants.
If you are interested in playing softball in the Boston Men's Shul Softball League, please contact Rabbi Sisenwine at [email protected]. There are three different divisions: Single A, Double A, and Triple A, and we have spots remaining on all of our teams. Games take place on Sunday mornings, from April through June.
Congratulations to our TBE Softball teams on another outstanding season! This year, TBE fielded an unprecedented 5 teams in the Men's Shul Softball Team ("MSSL"). Four of our teams qualified for the playoffs with TBE 3 and TBE 4 successfully making it to the semi-finals. TBE 1 won the league championship for the third consecutive season, insuring that the coveted "Kiddish Cup" trophy would remain at Beth Elohim. Mazel Tov to all the players for another great season. The true success of our softball teams, however, is not measured only by their prowess on the softball field but also by the connections the player forge with fellow TBE members. These teams exemplify the strong bonds for which our community is known. In 2004, Temple Beth Elohim fielded its first team in the Mens Shul Softball League (MSSL). The goal in forming the team was to provide these temple members with an opportunity to forge lasting relationships with other temple members by playing together on this semi-competitive softball league. In its inaugural season, TBE1 went undefeated and reached the championship game, only to lose the Kiddush Cup to Temple Young Israel. The success on the field, however, could not compare with the success the team had in achieving its goal of bringing these temple members together in friendship and camaraderie.
In 2006, our temple was fortunate enough to form a second team, TBE2. In its first year, TBE2 had a wonderful first season, reached the playoffs, but was defeated by TBE1 in the second round. TBE1 then went on to win its first "Kiddush Cup" in dramatic fashion defeating Young Israel in a rematch of the 2004 title game, on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. TBE1 then went on to win its second Kiddush Cup in 2008, defeating a strong Temple Israel-Natick team.
The success of TBE softball led to the formation of a third team, TBE3, in 2010. In its inaugural season, TBE3 reached the MSSL semi-finals, where it was defeated by TBE2. TBE2 then advanced to the Kiddush Cup, losing to Temple Isaiah. The 2010 season marked the first time that any congregation in the league had three teams advance to the post-season.
In 2011, demand for roster spots grew to an unprecedented level such that our temple was able to form a fourth team, TBE4. After a slow start, TBE4 ended the 2011 MSSL season on a high note, winning two of its final three games. Meanwhile, TBE1 went undefeated during the 2011 regular season. In an "epic" postseason en route to their 3rd Kiddush Cup, TBE 1 won all three of its post-season games in walkoff fashion (two of them in extra innings).
The TBE softball program has now grown to include nearly 80 men from the temple community playing softball in the MSSL. Its four teams represent the largest contingent of any congregation in the league. Since 2004, the temple has had representation in five Kiddush Cup games, winning three Championships. Yet the success of the softball teams can best be measured not in wins and losses or Kiddush cups won, but rather in the friendships and community which have been created among all of these players.
