Racial Justice Quarterly Meeting
- Monday, December 16
- 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Our RJI HOT TOPIC will focus on the state of education in the Commonwealth. Lisa Guisbond, Executive Director of Citizens for Public Education, will help us understand how funding gaps and other constructs have perpetuated and influenced the well-documented inequities in the educational experiences, opportunities, and achievement of students of color. Less than 30 percent of Black and Latino students achieved grade-level performance in reading in 2017 according to #1 for Some: Opportunity and Achievement in Massachusetts (Number-1-for-Some-9.25-18.pdf) The report also notes that “Black and Latino students in Massachusetts are three times more likely than white students to be assigned to a teacher who lacks content expertise in the subject they teach.
Education is the foundation not only of personal growth and success but also of our democracy. This is our first foray into this complicated and fascinating topic.
