Prison Book Program – a TBE MLK Day Project
- Monday, January 20
- 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
The Prison Book Program fills book requests from incarcerated people in prisons around the country. Our TBE volunteers will read prisoner letters with book requests, search the inventory room for books to match the requests, and process, invoice, write personal notes, and wrap book packages to send back to the prisoners.
For those interested in direct service to a scorned and often forgotten population. And for those interested in actions that support those impacted by the racially biased criminal justice system. Education behind bars has been shown to significantly reduce rates of recidivism, as well as supporting prisoners’ educational, vocational, and personal development while they are incarcerated and as they return to their families and communities.
This program is open to adults and teens ages 16 and older
Sponsored by CASA and Racial Justice Initiative: Community of Adult Social Action (CASA) volunteers work together on small-group social justice activities to make connections, build community, and express our Jewish values. TBE’s Racial Justice Initiative seeks to increase our understanding and activism to address ongoing discrimination and inequality.
