About Cantor Jonas
Cantor Marcie Jonas has been connected to Jewish music for more than 45 years. She has earned her B.A. in Speech Communication from Ithaca College, Ithaca NY, her M.A. in Jewish Education from JTS in New York City, and her Cantorial Ordination from Hebrew College, in Newton, MA. It was at Hebrew College where Cantor Jonas was the 2010 recipient of the Cantor Rick Boyer (z”l) prize for Excellence in Hazzanut. Cantor Jonas has also studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Hartt School of Music in Hartford Connecticut. It is Marcie’s love of Jewish music combined with her love of folk music (going to coffee houses, with her parents in the late 60s and early 70s) that helped to create her personal musical vision. Her personal connection to the synagogue environment has helped her to be keenly aware of the development of the synagogue service and the role that music plays in that process. Cantor Jonas serves congregations in the Greater Boston Area, she teaches at Hebrew College and is a VP on the Alumni Board. As a musical visionary in the Greater Boston area Cantor Jonas welcomes opportunities to create experiences in Jewish music that respect traditional nusach and embrace contemporary melodies, thus creating deep musical connections with her community.
