A Taste of Israeli Poetry
Writers and poets are often the mirrors of society, reflecting its actions and challenges. Join Dr. Judy Avnery, Senior Director of Jewish Learning and Living, to explore the work of several generations of modern Israeli secular poets, and examine the way they use Biblical text and liturgy to express contemporary issues such as the birth of the State of Israel and its ongoing struggles (internally as well as with its Arab neighbors), relationships between observance & secular Israelis, immigration of different ethnic groups to Israel and more. Together, we will read selected poems by a variety of Israeli poets and learn how changes in ideology and in Israeli society in the last 60 years affect and transform their writing. Poems will be provided in both English and Hebrew. Hebrew reading skills are not necessary to participate in the session.
